About
The expectations placed on companies of all sizes regarding socially responsible supply chain management and transparent reporting on environmental and social issues are rising—from business partners and consumers as well as from public authorities and legislation.
The heads of state and government of the G7 and G20 have recently agreed on important steps to enforce global labor, social, and environmental standards. A National Action Plan on “Business and Human Rights” also sets out the expectation that all companies in Germany introduce a process of corporate due diligence regarding respect for human rights, which includes mandatory core elements. Furthermore, starting in 2017, certain companies are required to disclose non-financial information on social and environmental impacts as part of their management reports. In light of these developments, UPJ and econsense, with the support of the Federal Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs, are organizing regional practical workshops in several federal states. These events will present the key background information and current developments on the topic, but above all will provide a forum for professional exchange among representatives from the business community.
At the opening of the workshop, Susanne Gasde (Head of the CSR Division – Corporate Social Responsibility at the Federal Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs) spoke about the federal government’s expectations of companies regarding the management of sustainable global challenges, as well as the associated challenges and opportunities. In her keynote address, Silke Thomas (Senior Expert Group Corporate Responsibility, Deutsche Telekom) highlighted how Deutsche Telekom integrates sustainable supplier development and the Sustainable Development Goals into its business activities.
In four workshops that followed, participants explored in greater depth the opportunities, challenges, and practical implementation issues related to responsible and transparent supply chains.
