09/25/2014 | Help Alliance under new patronage of Vivian Spohr

Lufthansa’s aid initiative, Help Alliance, has a new patron. Vivian Spohr, wife of the CEO of Deutsche Lufthansa AG, Carsten Spohr, is taking over this position on 25th September. "As its patron, I want to contribute to successfully further developing the work of the Help Alliance. For this purpose in future we will need strong financial support. I wish to make an active contribution to securing the financing of our projects and to further developing them.

09/15/2014 | Lufthansa conducts first European scheduled flight using sugar-based biofuel

The Lufthansa Group has marked another milestone in its pioneering work in the testing of alternative fuels. Today, Lufthansa flight LH 190 from Frankfurt to Berlin Tegel is being operated using a ten percent blend of the new biofuel component farnesan. This is the first scheduled flight in Europe to run on this fuel mix. Farnesan is a sugar-based bio-kerosene developed jointly by the TOTAL oil group and the U.S.-based biotech company Amyris, which in April of this year received RSB (Roundtable on Sustainable Biomaterials) Certification.

The reward for ongoing commitment: at the end of the 2013 school year, the first 18 young people from the Mothers’ Mercy Home (MMH) orphanage completed their secondary school education. The MMH is a center for activities supported by Cargo Human Care (CHC), an aid organization founded jointly by Lufthansa Cargo and German doctors in 2007. CHC provides rapid, unbureaucratic assistance for the sick and needy in the Kenyan capital Nairobi and surrounding area.

The Lufthansa Group has been involved in climate research for 20 years. During this time, a number of Lufthansa passenger aircraft have been operating as “flying labora­tories” with the aim of analyzing the composition of the middle atmosphere, without generating additional emissions in the process. The aviation group is a pioneer in this field and has made significant contributions towards improving weather forecasting and climate models.

For 180 children of employees from all business areas of the Lufthansa Group, a small dream will come true: when lots were drawn they all managed to get a coveted place in the company’s own "Luftikusse" holiday care programme. As of July 28, they will get the opportunity to take a close look at their mum or dad’s employer, into the exciting world of aviation. Following the great success of the holiday programme in 2013, the Group is further expanding its childcare offer during the 2014 summer holidays and now offers varied and professional care throughout the entire six weeks of vacation.

Already on entering the new Parent-Child Office on the ground floor of the Lufthansa Group office building at Frankfurt Airport, it is clear that this is no ordinary workplace. In addition to the desks, the cot, the cozy corner and the toy shop are sure to catch the eye. Children can easily keep themselves occupied here, while one of their parents is at work in the same room.

What makes a successful business founder? This was just one of the questions answered during the two-week Haiti Entrepreneurship Camp 2014, which was held in early June in Port-au-Prince. The idea was for volunteer experts to help 30 participants who already have a small company or at least a business idea to implement their concepts.

06/10/2014 | Airlines in the Lufthansa Airlines Group fly more eco-friendly with lighter containers

In the Lufthansa Group, cargo and luggage is now transported with much lighter containers and thus more fuel-efficient. In the last three years Lufthansa Cargo has completely replaced its fleet of containers with lightweight containers made of extremely durable composite materials. These are now used in cargo and passenger aircraft instead of the previous aluminum containers. Their use saves fuel and reduces emissions.

Lufthansa is currently testing a new continuous descent operation at Munich Airport, which it has developed together with German Air Traffic Control in Munich. It will thereby help all airline companies to save fuel and protect the environment.

In the airline industry, reducing the weight of an aircraft is an important way to cut fuel consumption. Each kilogram of weight saved lowers CO2 emissions and saves money. At Lufthansa German Airlines, for example, savings amount to 26,000 euros per year. This was the starting point for Lufthansa Technik’s research project “AIRtech – Advanced and Innovative Repair Technologies”.

Now the aviation group is involved in practical testing of a promising new production method for biokerosene: “Alcohol to Jet” (ATJ). It entails the fermentation of mainly plant waste to form isobutanol, which is then dehydrated and converted into kerosene using standard refinery processes. There is a wide range of suitable feedstocks. This makes the method as versatile as the Fischer-Tropsch process that is already approved, but it requires much lower initial investment.

04/22/2014 | Efficiency record for the airlines in the Lufthansa Group

In 2013 the passenger airlines in the Lufthansa Group beat the four-litre mark for the first time, with an average consumption of just 3.91 litres of kerosene per passenger per 100 kilometres. This is an improvement of 3.8 per cent over 2012. In short, the aviation group achieved over twice the annual efficiency target increase of 1.5 per cent set for the airline industry.

Researchers at the University of East Anglia in Norwich, England, have made a new discovery that will play a significant role in halting ozone depletion. Their findings were published recently in the renowned scientific journal Nature Geoscience.

Where do employees of Lufthansa Group need more support in order to reconcile their careers and their family life even more effectively? This question was the focus of the first Lufthansa Family Congress on 7th March at the Lufthansa Training & Conference Center in Seeheim. At the invitation of Dr. Bettina Volkens, Chief Officer Corporate Human Resources and Legal Affairs, around 70 employees from all areas of the Group exchanged views openly within the framework of a think-tank on all the issues and concerns associated with child care.

03/04/2014 | Deutsche Lufthansa: Efficiency gains reach new heights

The lighting in the A380 hangar at Frankfurt Airport is spot on. In one section of the building, Lufthansa Technik recently installed 24 high-performance LED floodlights on the ceiling – at a record-breaking height of 31 metres. Based on an annual usage of 6,000 hours, this modern light field alone will enable the company to save 88 megawatt-hours, and thus 40 tonnes of CO2, compared to the previous lighting system. That represents a 42 per cent improvement over conventional lighting.

02/12/2014 | Lufthansa takes delivery of world’s first aircraft with vortex generators

Lufthansa will today take delivery of its first Airbus A320 with vortex generators. The brand-new Airbus aircraft with registration D-AIUB is scheduled to land at Frankfurt Airport at 4.20 p.m. Based here, it will serve short and medium-haul destinations in Germany and Europe.

Gently upswept wings, high-tech wingtips, the saw-tooth pattern on the trailing edges of the jet engine nozzles and the characteristic “hump” at the front of the fuselage – as every Lufthansa aficionado knows, these are the distinguishing features of the Boeing 747-8. At first sight, however, it is not immediately apparent that this wide-bodied aircraft is also the “Queen of the Skies” in terms of noise emissions and fuel efficiency.
