09/25/2014 | Help Alliance under new patronage of Vivian Spohr

Lufthansa’s aid initiative, Help Alliance, has a new patron. Vivian Spohr, wife of the CEO of Deutsche Lufthansa AG, Carsten Spohr, is taking over this position on 25th September. "As its patron, I want to contribute to successfully further developing the work of the Help Alliance. For this purpose in future we will need strong financial support. I wish to make an active contribution to securing the financing of our projects and to further developing them. An important task will therefore be, together with the Executive Board of the Help Alliance, to look for new or additional sources of revenue for the Help Alliance”, says Vivian Spohr. Her first trips for the Help Alliance are already planned. "Currently, the alliance provides support for 35 aid projects in 18 countries on four continents. I have made a firm commit-ment to visit all of them, if possible. Before the end of this year I will be travelling to Lithuania and will visit the “Training Support for Children” project. Then I will be off to India to see the project “Lucky Children” in Tamilnadu", said Vivian Spohr.

The Help Alliance is celebrating its 15th anniversary this year. It was founded in 1999 by employees from all parts of the Group. The organization supports projects in developing countries, which have the objective of securing the people lead an independent life. The focal points of the humanitarian activities are food and health programmes, schools, training centres, business start-ups and street children projects. In addition, the organization also provides disaster relief. Since its foundation in 1999, the alliance has already supported 108 projects in Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe, Latin and South America, and in doing so has invested approximately nine million Euros. The project managers of the aid initiative work on a voluntary basis and are politically and religiously independent. Their exceptional personal commitment is the basis for the success of the organization and what makes it so special. The Lufthansa Group supports the organization financially, logistically and through communication measures. The donations come together, among other things, from the collection of donations on board passenger flights of the Lufthansa Group under the motto "Small Change can be a Big Help" and sponsoring memberships, corporate partnerships, numerous fundraising activities and cultural events.

For example, on the first Sunday in Advent, the Gürzenich Orchestra, a culture partner of Lufthansa, will be performing a benefit concert in Cologne’s Philharmonie, the net proceeds of which will be split equally between the Help Alliance and the “Wir helfen e.V.”. of Cologne’s local newspaper, the Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger. It promotes social projects in the Cologne region. Visitors to the benefit concert can look forward to an exciting programme with Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto in D Major op. 35 and Beethoven's Symphony No.7. As soloist, the Gürzenich Orchestra has been able to acquire the services of the world-famous violinist Midori.
